Breast Cancer Awareness Can Save More Than Your Life
Spreading the word can help you to save the lives of those you love.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is an important time for everyone – men and women – to remember how important it is to know how to identify the warning signs of the disease and to take action for early detection.
This month helps to spread the word about the difference that a mammogram makes to your survival.
These scans are very important to all women aged 40 years or older. Women in that age group should be tested every two years. Breast Cancer Awareness month is also the perfect time to make sure that all of the questions that you have about the disease, its screening processes, and its treatments, are answered. It is a great time to get the facts about the condition as a whole.
Breast cancer is not typically a killer, especially when it is detected early.
Here are some statistics that reinforce the importance of regular exams:
- An estimated 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the US during 2012.
- For women, an estimated 39,510 breast cancer deaths are expected in 2012
- Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women.
New medical advances and treatment technologies have made breast cancer one of the most survivable forms of the disease. In fact, among women aged 40 and older, the most common cause of death is heart disease, which is then followed by stroke, lung cancer, and other lung diseases.
Breast cancer is the fifth leading cause of death. To make sure that your risk is as low as possible, all you need to do is know the symptoms and receive screenings whenever appropriate (depending on your age and risk factors). Some of the symptoms of the condition are not well known, so take the time, this month, to learn what they are and check yourself regularly.
With medical advances, you can survive cancer with early detection, but will your finances survive cancer?
There are other things that can be done in conjunction with getting tested. Cancer insurance is a great tool to have in place to protect your finances as well. Along with being proactive physically there is the financial factor that most don’t take into account until it’s too late. Statistics shows us that health insurance will not cover almost 65% of the total cost of cancer treatments. This includes loss of wages, co-pays, deductibles, medications and travel expenses.
For less than a cup of coffee a day you have a cancer plan through Allstate that pays you for annual wellness tests plus, in the event of a diagnoses, as many other coverages…all that pay you, not the medical providers.
Take the time to use Breast Cancer Awareness month to learn more about the disease and start your cancer insurance protection. Don’t forget to tell a friend, too. You could save a life.
